Apple Maps renames Lake Ontario as Lake America after Trump order

Apple Maps has renamed Lake Ontario to Lake America, a move that has sparked controversy and confusion among users. This change appears to be in response to an executive order issued by former US President Donald Trump, which aimed to promote the use of "America" in geographic names. The order, signed in 2020, instructed federal agencies to use the term "America" in place of "Lake Ontario" when referring to the body of water that borders the United States and Canada.

The renaming of Lake Ontario is not an isolated incident, as Google Maps also made a similar change earlier this year. The decision by both tech giants has been met with criticism from geographers, cartographers, and users who argue that the name change is not recognized by international authorities and may cause confusion. The International Hydrographic Organization and the US Board on Geographic Names have not recognized "Lake America" as an official name for the lake. This move highlights the influence that technology companies can have on the way we perceive and interact with geographic information.

As the use of digital maps becomes increasingly prevalent, it's essential to consider the implications of such changes on navigation, education, and cultural heritage. Users should be aware that both Apple Maps and Google Maps now display the renamed lake, although other mapping services may still use the traditional name. What's next to watch is how other technology companies and mapping services respond to this change and whether the name "Lake America" gains widespread acceptance. Additionally, it remains to be seen how Apple and Google will address concerns from users, geographers, and authorities regarding the renaming of Lake Ontario.
